Helping Others

Hoea Tō Waka

Hoea Tō Waka is a Dream Makers Trust program. A fun filled 6 months, covering Emotions, Creative Art, Equestrian Therapy and Nature awareness.
The Hoea To Waka Programme uses Te Whare Tapa Wha Model, integrating all four pou of the whare (or all four corner posts of the house)- Taha Hinengaro (mental and emotional well-being), Taha Tinana (physical well-being), Taha Wairua (spiritual wellbeing), and Taha Whanau/family.
It is focusing on rangatahi/ youth who have been identified as "high risk" due to their behaviour or circumstances. It is to be culturally appropriate, accessible and engaging to youth.

Some of the outcomes are as follows:

  • Youth have increased emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being Stronger families


  • Youth able to manage emotions more positively and have increased empathy for others


  • Youth have increased awareness of support networks within families and community


  • Decreased risk-taking and anti-social behaviour


  • Youth developing future goals and steps to reach them so that they are more positively focused


  • Improved Communication and Social Skills


  • Increased Self-Responsibility and Confidence


  • Increased Trust, Relationship Building and Problem Solving skills


  • Improved Participation in Community


  • Artistic and Creative Development


  • Physical activity, participation in Outdoor Activities


  • Therapeutic horse sessions

Programme uses group-work, learning through games and artistic creative expression with art, music, film.
Whanau/community outreach activities
Individual needs/issues are highlighted through referral process, which includes whanau, which are then incorporated in programme.
